RA and allergic reactions

Hi,
I was diagnosed with RA on 2011, fibro in 1990, degenerative disc disease 2000. In the past 2 years I have been through 5 different infusions, injections, and RA medications with the only result of breaking out with massive hives. Yes, I have seen the Dermatologist and Allergy specialists. Through all of this have taken many MEDROL packs and have found that staying on a low dose (5-2.5 mg) of prednisone works best for me. My recent follow up for hives from Cimzia has resulted in adding Hydroxychloroquine and possibly Dupixent, per another visit to the Derm. Currently I'm taking 10 mg. prednisone and Zyrtec daily with a strong cream to help with the incessant itching!

Has anyone else experienced this issue with their RA meds?
Mary

  1. Hi, (Mary),

First off, I am sorry you are struggling with hives. I know some of our members have experienced hives when taking methotrexate, hydroxychloroquine and sulfasalazine (it's even listed as a potential side effect -- https://rheumatoidarthritis.net/treatment/sulfasalazine). I know it makes it that much harder to find effective treatments when many of them cause you to break out in hives! I don't know what's the best option to avoid the hives, as it can be risky to not treat your RA. I do hope your dermatologist and your GP or rheumatologist are able to keep working with you to minimize the hive reaction!

    Best, Erin, Team Member.
